Men & Women of Football History

In 2010, seventy or so former players attended a reunion dinner at the Hamilton Azzurri Football Club in Highfields, NSW. The intention was to fraternise and renew old friendships, but the event was such a success that organisers realised the gathering had more to offer.

While most ex-players were enjoying comfortable times, there were those who weren’t. It was decided to create a fund-raising project to assist former players who had fallen on hard times.

A committee was formed, a name agreed on and then registered as Men of Football. In 2021 the name was changed to Men & Women of Football.

Since its inception the Hunter chapter’s diary has depicted our football-flavoured fund-raising activities:

The Jack O’Brien function at Wallsend RSL in honour of a football legend.
Newcastle KB United 35th anniversary. Held at the Duke Hotel, the event was booked out with those unable to acquire tickets gathering outside the function room to have memorabilia signed and to mingle with their heroes. Newcastle KB United 40th anniversary with A-League coach Ernie Merrick as guest speaker.
A sold-out dinner to honour Hunter Region players who had represented Australia. The 17 honoured guests ranged in age from 35 to 90 and, when interviewed, offered incredible insights of their times in our great game.

Socceroos’ coach Ange Postecoglou luncheon attracted a packed auditorium of more than 250 guests to Merewether Surf House. His brilliant and passionate insights had the audience spellbound.
